The Charles River Center in Needham, Massachusetts,  a non-profit organization that supports and empowers persons with developmental disabilities through high quality services for independence and community inclusion,  has selected HPOD’s China Program Director Dr. Cui Fengming as the recipient of its Maria McTernan Leadership Award this year. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in supporting the disability community. The award will be presented to Dr. Cui at the 25th annual Building A Dream Gala on May 2 held by the Charles River Center at  Four Points by Sheraton  in Norwood Mass.

“We are proud to present Dr. Cui with our Maria McTernan Leadership Award,” said Anne-Marie Bajwa, President and CEO of the Charles River Center. “We’re honored to celebrate her accomplishments as an advocate for the disability community, as well as the work Dr. Cui has done with Charles River to broaden the scope of programming we offer our families.”

The award honors Dr. Cui for devoting her career to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities and family support network as a disability rights expert and her unique contribution to promoting mutual exchange of good practice cross borders. As the Director of HPOD’s China Program,  Dr. Cui focuses on disability-inclusive education, employment, community, and society. Through her long-term teaching, research, pro bono and advisory work for law and policy development in the field, she’s been dedicated to closing gaps between theories of disability rights to the real situation of persons with disabilities and their families. She has been making consistent efforts for equal participation of persons with disabilities and professional development of disabilities organizations. Her achievements indicate HPOD’s gratifying work for international disability rights by bringing wisdom, experience, knowledge, discipline, and efforts together for meaningful social development.

“We are thrilled,” wrote Professor Bill Alford, HPOD Chair, and Professor Michael Stein, HPOD Executive Director, “that the extraordinary work of our wonderful colleague Dr. Cui Fengming is receiving recognition from so worthy an organization as the Charles River Center. Fengming has done so much good for so many people in China and in the US. This is a richly deserved honor!”
