Jean Elphick

Over the past 10 years I have developed a career in which the pursuit of equality and justice for marginalised young people is central. My background lies in public health, at various rural hospitals in the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Lesotho. More recently my work has centered on empowering families of children with disabilities in townships in Gauteng to access their human rights. Over the past year I have headed up several programmes that use civic education, self-advocacy groups, campaigning and individualised case management to empower under-served populations to respond to and prevent human rights violations.

I am able to offer clinical expertise; demonstrated research and leadership skills in complex environments; a detailed working knowledge of national and international legal instruments and policies pertaining to the rights of young people; and finally, extensive experience in providing civic education, advice and support to marginalised groups, including caregivers of children with disabilities.

My areas of interest include human rights, child protection, gender-based violence, civic participation and empowerment.
